The 2024/25 snooker season is up and running and Shanghai has the pleasure of hosting the first big event of the new campaign.
The tournament returned last year after a four-year absence following the Covid-19 pandemic, which meant Ronnie O’Sullivan was able to seal a record fifth title – totalling his fourth in succession.
But heavy is the head that wears the crown in China.

2024 Shanghai Masters Snooker – The Favourites
Ronnie O’Sullivan - 9/4
Despite missing out on an eighth World Championship in the spring, Ronnie O’Sullivan’s 2023/24 season was, once again, remarkable.
The “Rocket” won ranking titles at the UK Championship and World Grand Prix, and also picked up titles at the Masters, World Masters of Snooker and… the Shanghai Masters.
But above all of this, the veteran still seems to have a hunger to improve his snooker and continue to play at the highest level – an ominous admission for the rest of the tour to hear.
O’Sullivan has been perfect in Shanghai across the last four events and there is no wonder he opens up as a 9/4 FAV before a ball has been potted in China.
Judd Trump - 4/1
Judd Trump’s five ranking tournament wins across the 2023/24 season was pretty spectacular.
Sure, the “Ace in the Pack” fell short by losing in another World Championship quarter-final, but you’d struggle to argue convincingly that anyone else played better and more consistent snooker across the last campaign.
Trump is a three-time losing finalist at the Shanghai Masters, and although it is no longer a ranking tournament, he’ll be eager to get that monkey off his back.
He is, however, paired in the same half of the draw as O’Sullivan...
Mark Allen - 8/1
Mark Allen is another former losing finalist at the Shanghai Masters, coming second best to a rampant Stuart Bingham in 2014.
The Northern Irishman is the number one in the world and will always be in the mix for the biggest titles on the tour.
Allen finds himself the opposite side of the draw to Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump so his route to the final is clearer than it could possibly look.
Mark Selby - 8/1
Questions over Mark Selby’s future in the sport circled once again at the end of the World Championship, but if the “Jester” enters a tournament then he is always going to feature at the top of the betting.
The four-time world champion won this title back in 2011, and off the back of a semi-final run last year will be confidence in performing well once again in Shanghai.
Like Allen, Selby will avoid Trump and O’Sullivan until the final, meaning his 8/1 outright price holds good value.
Kyren Wilson - 8/1
2024 world champion Kyren Wilson will have the bit between his teeth this season.
“The Warrior” is up to number three in the world following his Crucible win a few months ago and will look to start his campaign stronger than at the start of the 2023/24 season.
He opens his Shanghai Masters attempt against the winner of Barry Hawkins vs. Zhou Yuelong and his 8/1 price is probably reflective of his poor run at the Championship League at the end of June.

Judd Trump to win Quarter 2
Trump has to get past Luca Brecel, Mark Williams, Si Jiahui and Tom Ford in his quarter, and considering the form that he showed last season, this shouldn’t be too big of a task as he eyes a semi-final with O’Sullivan.
Trump doesn’t often fall early in tournaments, so winning Quarter 2 at Evens look solid.
Mark Allen to reach the final
Mark Allen finds himself in the bottom half of the draw avoiding Judd Trump and Ronnie O’Sullivan until at least the final.
It won’t be plain sailing for the Northern Irishman – he will likely be paired with Mark Selby or Jak Jones in the quarter-final, and possibly the reigning world champion in the semi – but Allen is a teak tough operator in these grand events and at 7/2 is a great bet to win four matches where he will probably start favourite.
Winner’s half – top half
It’s still early days in the new season but we’re not expecting too much difference in who dominates on the WST.
Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump occupy the top half of the draw and if either are able to jump the hurdles put in front of them en route to the last two, then either man will start as a big favourite in the final.
