Types of Formula 1 Bets Explained

The leading F1 betting sites offer a wide array of F1 betting markets and if you have a Formula 1 tip, you are sure to be able to bet on it. Here's a rundown of the usually available bets of F1 plus some example to help you understand them better.

How to Bet on Formula 1

You will find Formula 1 betting markets listed in the main menu of all major online sportsbooks.

Throughout the year the F1 World Championship markets will be on offer and as race weekends draw closer markets on F1 races will appear. Placing a bet on Formula 1 tips is reasonably straightforward, little different to football with several ‘markets within markets’.

🏁 Betting on Race Winner

The first one is quite straightforward, simply pick the driver you think will win the race.

Example: If you think Lando Norris will win at the Chinese Grand Prix, and he’s priced at 5/1, a £10 bet would return £60 if he finishes first.

This market is popular for punters who prefer to bet on outright bets, especially when a top driver starts near the front on a track that suits their car.

🥈 Bet on Podium Finish

You think a driver will end in the top three? Place a podium finish bet. This gives you more flexibility than backing the winner, especially if a driver tends to be strong but not quite dominant.

Example: Charles Leclerc is expected to be quick in qualifying at Monaco but it's difficult to predict if he finishes first. A top 3 bet is a safer one when compared to an outright win.

🏆 Drivers' Championship Winner

Bet on a driver to win the whole Drivers' Championship at the end of the season. Of course the season is a long one but if you fancy backing one of the drivers long term, this is your bet.

Example: If you backed Oscar Piastri at 9/4 early in the season, and he goes on to win the championship, your bet will be a winner regardless of what happens in individual races throughout.

🏎️ Constructors' Championship Winner

Same as the Drivers' Championship Winner betting, but this one’s based on team results. Both drivers score points during the season and both the drivers' point will be added to the team points.

Example: McLaren have started quite strong — if they keep the same pace, a 1/8 bet on them to take the Constructors' Championship could still be practical.

📊 Points Finish

The top 10 drivers gain points during a Grand Prix. You think one of the drivers will make it in the chart? This is useful to identify midfield runners or consistent performers.

Example: You think Yuki Tsunoda will do well in his home race Suzuka, but not well enough to end on the podium. If he’s priced at 11/8 to score points, it might worth a shot.

🧯 Safety Car Appearance

A simple yes or no bet on whether the safety car will make an appearance during the race. More common on street circuits or wet weekends.

Example: Las Vegas is still a relatively new track, and mistakes are more likely. A “Yes” on the safety car appearance might be priced around 1/2.

🔄 Head-to-Head (Driver Match Bets)

You’re comparing two drivers head to head here. Positions don't really matter here, just who will end in front of the other.

Example: If you think George Russell on a Mercedes will finish ahead of Carlos Sainz on a Williams at Silverstone, you can bet on him as the driver who will win in their race, regardless of where they both finish.

🛠️ Qualifying Bets

These are markets that are offered for the days preceding race day. Who will start on pole? Who will win head to head in qualifying?

Example: You might be able to bet on Max Verstappen to grab pole in Japan at even money, or back Ferrari to get both drivers into the top six on the grid.

How Formula 1 Works

The Formula 1 season, which runs from March 14 to December 7 in 2025 and consists of 24 races all of which are staged on a Sunday. If you are in the UK some races may be live at odd times such as Australia or USA. Sprint race was also added in the mix where all the cars will still qualify for it and have a shorter version of the race. Cars do not need to pit in this kind of race that runs on selected Saturdays.

On weekends where there are no F1 sprint races, there are two practice sessions on the Friday, a third practice session on Saturday followed by a qualifying session later or sprint race that day. This completes a ‘Formula 1 weekend’.

The Formula 1 Drivers Championship, F1 betting’s ongoing ante-post betting market, is decided by points drivers acquire at each race. The winner receives 25 world championship points, the runner-up 18, third gets 15, fourth 12 and this continues down to tenth where a single point is awarded.

In addition to the Drivers & Constructors Championships there are Formula 1 betting opportunities on the outcome of practice sessions, qualifying sessions and a host of Formula 1 odds on race markets and stats markets such as the number of race finishers.

Formula 1 Schedule 2025

Formula 1 betting odds are available on all of the season’s races and they become available within days of the previous race being completed. Making your Formula 1 predictions long before the race can prove fruitful especially for Formula 1 betting specialists who know what circuits will play to individual teams strengths.

Formula 1 Betting FAQs

What is the best type of F1 bet?

The markets on the race winner is rarely anything other than accurate but there is a ‘horses for courses’ concept in Formula 1 which means markets such as ‘Fastest Lap’ is often incorrectly priced-up on recent results meaning this market often features some good value F1 betting odds.

When is the best time to place Formula 1 bets?

Most Formula 1 tipsters who do a lot of research on the sport will tell you the best time to place your bets is on the Tuesday before race weekend when the Formula 1 betting odds are first advertised and often feature mistakes and discrepancies which can be exploited.

What’s the best Formula 1 betting advice?

Definitely subscribe to all drivers and Formula 1 team’s Twitter feed which often helps you get the latest F1 news and you can often act on it before online bookmakers get time to react to things - such as a car which is set to start a race with a grid penalty.

Should you play race markets each-way?

Following qualifying there is often an odds-on favourite in the race win market and that leads bookmakers to only offer places 1-2 as part of their each-way terms. Therefore, do play Formula 1 betting markets each-way but only at the start of a race weekend when positions 1-2-3 are paid out as winners.
