Ukraine Euro 2024 Top Tip

Despite having to go through the play-offs to reach Euro 2024, Ukraine have been handed a fairly kind group phase draw.

Ukraine will face off with Belgium, Slovakia and Romania in Group E, with Belgium the current favourites to secure top spot.

However, 2nd and 3rd place are up for grabs, with Ukraine currently priced at a generous 8/11 to make it into the last-16.

On paper, Ukraine are expected to beat both Romania and Slovakia but even if they fail to do so, they should have little issue qualifying for the knockout phase via the 3rd-place rule. At Euro 2020, Ukraine earned just three points and a -1 goal difference in their group but still advanced to the last-16.

Ukraine’s Road to Qualification

As already mentioned, Ukraine had to go through the play-offs to book their spot at Euro 2024.

They were drawn in a tough qualifying group which, unsurprisingly, saw England and Italy claim the top two spots with Ukraine finishing 3rd ahead of North Macedonia and Malta.

Ukraine then beat Bosnia and Herzegovina in their first play-off clash before securing the same result against Iceland in their final clash of the March international break.

When are Ukraine’s Euro 2024 games?

Ukraine will play three Euro 2024 group games. The opponents and dates can be found below:

  • Group C - Romania vs Ukraine, June 17.
  • Group C - Slovakia vs Ukraine, June 21.
  • Group C - Ukraine vs Belgium, June 26.

Ukraine’s Road to the Final

Anyone who is looking at backing Ukraine for success will want to know how they can get to the final. Their paths are determined by where they finish in the group, either first, second or third - and here are the various permutations that they will have to navigate.

Round of 16

  • If Ukraine win Group E - Their last 16 game will be against one of the third-place teams from Group A/B/C/D. This game will be played on July 2.
  • If Ukraine are runners up in Group E - Their last 16 game will come against the runner-up of Group D - most likely the Netherlands. This game will be played on July 2.
  • If Ukraine finish third in Group E (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Their last 16 game will be against either the winner of Group B - Spain, Italy, Croatia, Albania- or the winner of Group C - England, Denmark, Slovenia, Serbia. These games will be played on June 30 or July 2.

Quarter-Finals

  • If Ukraine win Group E - They will face the winner of the last-16 clash between the Group D winner vs the runner-up in Group F. On paper, their most likely opponent will be France. This game will be played on July 6.
  • If Ukraine are runners up in Group E - They will face the winner of the last-16 clash between the Group F winner vs one of the 3rd-place teams from Group A/B/C/. Their most likely opponent would be Portugal (coming in as Group F winners). This game will be played on July 5.
  • If Ukraine finish third in Group E (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - They will either face the winner of the last-16 clash between Group A’s winner and C’s runners-up or the winner of the game between Group A’s runner-up and Group B’s runner-up. These games will be played on July 5 or July 6.

Semi-Finals

  • If Ukraine win Group E - Many assumptions have to be made by the time we get to this stage, but if things go as expected, Ukraine will face either England, France, Switzerland or Italy in the semi-final. This game will be played on July 10.
  • If Ukraine are runners up in Group E - Again, a lot of assumptions need to be made here but Ukraine’s most likely opponents are Germany, Portugal or Spain. This game will be played on July 9.
  • If Ukraine finish third in Group E (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Given how the third-place teams are put into the knockout phase, Ukraine could face any of the teams mentioned above. These games will be played on July 9 or July 10.

Final

  • If Ukraine win Group E - On the opposing side of the draw in this scenario would be the likes of Germany, Spain, or Portugal - of said clubs, Spain seem the most likely to make it to the final. The final will be played on July 14.
  • If Ukraine are runners up in Group E - On the opposing side of the draw in this scenario would be the likes of France, England, Italy or Belgium.
  • If Ukraine finish third in Group E (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Ukraine could be put onto either side of the draw depending on how they rank among the third-place teams, meaning they could face any of the big hitters we have mentioned above.

Ukraine’s Key Players

Oleksandr Zinchenko - Oleksandr Zinchenko has cemented himself as one of Ukraine’s standout stars over the last several years and has captained them on numerous occasions. The Arsenal left-back is one of the more talented members of the current squad, which is why he is often deployed in a central midfield role for his country, instead of his traditional defensive position. Zinchenko has scored nine and assisted five for Ukraine in 60 caps.

Mykhailo Mudryk - Mykhailo Mudryk’s time at Chelsea has been inundated with criticism. He has shown patches of quality for the Blues but struggles to hold down a regular starting berth. However, the 23-year-old remains a key figure for the national team. He has missed just one game since his debut in 2022 and most recently scored the winner vs Iceland to send Ukraine to Germany.

Viktor Tsygankov - Viktor Tsygankov is one of Ukraine’s biggest attacking threats currently and will need to be at his best if they are to have any success this summer. The 26-year-old was their top scorer in qualifying and netted in the aforementioned 2-1 win over Iceland during the March international games. Tsygankov has 12 goals for his country, making him their 7th all-time top scorer.
