Turkey Euro 2024 Top Tip
As alluded to, Turkey have only ever gone beyond the group phase at two European Championships, winning only one of their last seven matches at the tournament, this too little too late against Czechia in 2016.
However, having been drawn into a gentle group, and this may be a fool’s errand, we’re backing Vincenzo Montella’s team to make it through to the round of 16.

Turkey′s Road to Qualification
At one stage, it appeared as though Türkiye had messed up qualification, requiring a mid-campaign managerial change to get over the line.
Last September, they were held to a 1-1 draw by Armenia in Eskişehir, needing a last-gasp equaliser from Bertuğ Yıldırım to pinch a point, before being hammered 4-2 by Japan in a friendly four days later.
These two results saw Stefan Kuntz sacked as head coach, after just 20 games in charge, with former AC Milan, Sevilla and Fiorentina manager Vincenzo Montella his replacement.
Well, the Italian certainly had an instant impact, masterminding a 1-0 win in Osijek in his first game as boss, Barış Alper Yılmaz the match-winner, inflicting Croatia’s first-ever home defeat in a Euro qualifier.
After that, the Crescent-Stars hammered Latvia 4-0 and then beat Germany 3-2 in a friendly in Berlin, and were already guaranteed qualification prior to their 1-1 draw with Wales on the final matchday.
Getting to Euros has not been Türkiye’s problem in the last two decades or so, qualifying for six of the last eight editions, but they often make little impact, seeking to avoid a repeat of this pattern this summer.

Turkey’s Key Players
Orkun Kokçu- Also eligible for Netherlands, Orkun Kökçü has become a key figure for Türkiye since his debut in 2020, winning 25 caps and scoring two goals, one of which came in Yerevan on the opening matchday of qualifying.
At club level, after winning the Eredivisie title as Feyenoord captain, Kökçü joined Benfica last summer for €25 million, thereby becoming both Feyenoord’s record-sale and Benfica’s record-signing simultaneously. Only two Turkish players, Arda Güler (€30 million), more in him shortly, and Arda Turan have ever commanded higher fees.
Hakan Calhanoglu- Alongside Kökçü will be the most high-profile member of this squad Hakan Çalhanoğlu, who captains the team, hoping to add to his 84 caps, only eight Turkish players can boast more.
Earlier in his career, Çalhanoğlu was a flamboyant, creating winger, most well-known for his long-range free-kick goals, netting 17 times for his country so far.
However, the most-recent of these goals came in 2022, and this is indicative of his change of role; since switching AC Milan for fierce rivals Inter, he’s become, self-declared, one of the best registas in the world, sitting deeper and dictating play, something, in fairness, he’s become very good at.
Arda Guler- At the other end of the expirence scale is Arda Güler, who has just six caps to his name, his sole goal coming against Wales last June.
As mentioned, at just 18 years old, Güler joined Real Madrid for €30 million in July 2023, his season hampered by injury, making only seven appearances so far, his first goal for los Blancos coming against Celta Vigo in March.
Nevertheless, this teenager, assuming he’s fit an available, will be a key figure for Türkiye at this tournament, needing him to be at his brilliant best if they’re to upset the odds and make a deep run.
