Romania Euro 2024 Top Tip

Romania have been drawn in Group E in Germany, with Belgium favourites to secure top spot.

However, 2nd place is very much up for grabs and will likely come down to whoever wins the meetings between Romania, Ukraine and Slovakia.

At present, Romania are 3rd-favourites in Group E to make it to the last-16 behind Belgium and Ukraine. But even if they fail to finish 2nd in the group, they can still make it into the last-16 via the third-place play-off.

Romania’s Road to Qualification

Romania had a very impressive qualifying campaign, which saw them top Group I and go undefeated in their 10 games.

Romania were drawn alongside Switzerland, Israel, Belarus, Kosovo and Androra - doing well to beat group favourites Switzerland to top spot.

Romania won six, drew four, lost zero, scored 16 and conceded just five in their 10 Euro 2024 qualifiers.

When are Romania’s Euro 2024 games?

Romania will play three Euro 2024 group games. The opponents and dates can be found below:

  • Group C - Romania vs Ukraine, June 17.
  • Group C - Belgium vs Romania, June 22.
  • Group C - Slovakia vs Romania, June 26.

Romania’s Road to the Final

Anyone who is looking at backing Romania for success will want to know how they can get to the final. Their paths are determined by where they finish in the group, either first, second or third - and here are the various permutations that they will have to navigate.

Round of 16

  • If Romania win Group E - Their last 16 game will be against one of the third-place teams from Group A/B/C/D. This game will be played on July 2.
  • If Romania are runners up in Group E - Their last 16 game will come against the runner-up of Group D - most likely the Netherlands. This game will be played on July 2.
  • If Romania finish third in Group E (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Their last 16 game will be against either the winner of Group B - Spain, Italy, Croatia, Albania- or the winner of Group C - England, Denmark, Slovenia, Serbia. These games will be played on June 30 or July 2.

Quarter-Finals

  • If Romania win Group E - They will face the winner of the last-16 clash between the Group D winner vs the runner-up in Group F. On paper, their most likely opponent will be France. This game will be played on July 6.
  • If Romania are runners up in Group E - They will face the winner of the last-16 clash between the Group F winner vs one of the 3rd-place teams from Group A/B/C/. Their most likely opponent would be Portugal (coming in as Group F winners). This game will be played on July 5.
  • If Romania finish third in Group E (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - They will either face the winner of the last-16 clash between Group A’s winner and C’s runners-up or the winner of the game between Group A’s runner-up and Group B’s runner-up. These games will be played on July 5 or July 6.

Semi-Finals

  • If Romania win Group E - Many assumptions have to be made by the time we get to this stage, but if things go as expected, Romania will face either England, France, Switzerland or Italy in the semi-final. This game will be played on July 10.
  • If Romania are runners up in Group E - Again, a lot of assumptions need to be made here but Romania’s most likely opponents are Germany, Portugal or Spain. This game will be played on July 9.
  • If Romania finish third in Group E (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Given how the third-place teams are put into the knockout phase, Romania could face any of the teams mentioned above. These games will be played on July 9 or July 10.

Final

  • If Romania win Group E - On the opposing side of the draw in this scenario would be the likes of Germany, Spain, or Portugal - of said clubs, Spain seem the most likely to make it to the final. The final will be played on July 14.
  • If Romania are runners up in Group E - On the opposing side of the draw in this scenario would be the likes of France, England, Italy or Belgium.
  • If Romania finish third in Group E (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Romania could be put onto either side of the draw depending on how they rank among the third-place teams, meaning they could face any of the big hitters we have mentioned above.

Euro 2024

Romania’s Key Players

Nicolae Stanciu - The majority of Romania’s goals at Euro 2024 are expected to come from Nicolae Stanciu. He is their highest-scoring active player and was their joint-top scorer in qualifying for the tournament in Germany. The striker has also recently taken up the captain’s armband for Romania and impressed while doing so.

Ianis Hagi - Ianis Hagi is the biggest natural talent in Romania’s squad right now but has big footsteps to follow in, with his father Romania legend, Gheorghe Hagi. So far, though, Ianis has impressed with Rangers and in Spain, while also excelling in various positions across the frontline for the national side.

Radu Dragușin - Radu Dragusin, currently plying his trade with Premier League outfit Tottenham, is Romania’s best central defender and was crucial in them conceding just five goals in 10 Euro 2024 qualifiers. This impressive form earned him a move to the Premier League and at 22 years of age, he can still improve further.
