Poland Euro 2024 Top Tip

As was to be expected given they had to go through the play-offs to gain entry to the tournament, Poland have been handed a very tough group.

They will face France, Netherlands and Austria in Group D. On paper, France and Netherlands are likely to take the top two spots, though a win over the Dutch outfit could easily see Poland nick second place.

Regardless, Poland have a very good chance of making it into the last-16 stage thanks to the 3rd-place rule that is now active at the European Championships. At Euro 2020, for example, Ukraine made it into the last-16 after securing just three points and a -1 goal difference in their group. So, even if they lose to France and the Netherlands, Poland could just beat Austria and hope Ralf Rangnick’s side also come up short versus the other sides in Group D.

Poland’s Road to Qualification

As already mentioned, Poland had a tough time securing a spot at Euro 2024. They were initially drawn in Group E for qualifying alongside Albania, Czech Republic, Moldova and the Faroe Islands.

Poland, somewhat surprisingly, went on to lose three and draw two of their qualifying games, meaning Albania and Czech Republic took the top two qualifying spots with Poland finishing 3rd.

This meant Poland had a second shot at making it to Germany via the play-offs, which took place during the March international break. Poland beat Estonia 5-1 in their first play-off clash before seeing off Wales after a 5-4 penalty shootout.

When are Poland’s Euro 2024 games?

Poland will play three Euro 2024 group games. The opponents and dates can be found below:

  • Group C - Poland vs Netherlands, June 16.
  • Group C - Poland vs Austria, June 21.
  • Group C - France vs Poland, June 25.

Poland’s Road to the Final

Anyone who is looking at backing Poland for success will want to know how they can get to the final. Their paths are determined by where they finish in the group, either first, second or third - and here are the various permutations that they will have to navigate.

Round of 16

  • If Poland win Group D - Their last 16 game will be against the runner up of Group F, which will most likely be Czech Republic. This game will be played on June 30.
  • If Poland are runners up in Group D - Their last 16 game will come against the runner-up of Group E - most likely Slovakia or Romania. This game will be played on July 2.
  • If Poland finish third in Group D (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Their last 16 game will be against either the winner of Group E - Belgium, Slovakia, Romania, TBD - or the winner of Group C - England, Denmark, Slovenia, Serbia. These games will be played on June 29 or July 2.

Quarter-Finals

  • If Poland win Group D - They will face the winner of the last-16 clash between the Group E winner vs one of the third-place teams from Group A/B/C/D. On paper, their most likely opponent will be Belgium. This game will be played on July 6.
  • If Poland are runners up in Group D - They will face the winner of the last-16 clash between the Group F winner vs one of the 3rd-place teams from Group A/B/C/. Their most likely opponent would be Portugal (coming in as Group F winners). This game will be played on July 5.
  • If France finish third in Group D (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - They will either face the winner of the last-16 clash between Group A’s winner and C’s runners-up or the winner of the game between Group A’s runner-up and Group B’s runner-up. These games will be played on July 5 or July 6.

Semi-Finals

  • If Poland win Group D - Many assumptions have to be made by the time we get to this stage, but if things go as expected, Poland will face either England, Switzerland or Italy in the semi-final. This game will be played on July 10.
  • If Poland are runners up in Group D - Again, a lot of assumptions need to be made here but Poland’s most likely opponents are Germany or Spain. This game will be played on July 9.
  • If Poland finish third in Group D (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Given how the third-place teams are put into the knockout phase, Poland could face any of the teams mentioned above. These games will be played on July 9 or July 10.

Final

  • If Poland win Group D - On the opposing side of the draw in this scenario would be the likes of Germany, Spain, or Portugal - of said clubs, Spain seem the most likely to make it to the final. The final will be played on July 14.
  • If Poland are runners up in Group D - On the opposing side of the draw in this scenario would be the likes of Belgium, France, England or Italy.
  • If Poland finish third in Group D (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Poland could be put onto either side of the draw depending on how they rank among the third-place teams, meaning they could face any of the big hitters we have mentioned above.

Poland’s Key Players

Robert Lewandowski - At the age of 35, Robert Lewandowski is set to take part in what is almost certainly his final European Championship and potentially, his final major tournament. Despite his age, though, Lewandowski remains Poland’s best player. The striker is their all-time top goalscorer with 81 - almost double the tally of 2nd place (45). And though he will be 36 in August, Lewandowski is still going strong at the highest level for his club. The hitman has 20 goals and nine assists in 39 games for FC Barcelona in 2023/24 at the time of writing.

Wojciech Szczesny - Like Lewandowski, Wojciech Szczesny is getting on in years but continues to be a crucial part of the Poland set-up. The 33-year-old has been featuring for Poland’s senior side since 2009 and has been their no.1 for several years now, ousting West Ham’s Lukasz Fabianski from the role. The Juventus shot-stopper has come up clutch in many games for Poland over the years, most recently saving Dan James’ penalty to secure Poland’s spot at Euro 2024.

Jakub Kiwior - Out with the old, in with the new. 24-year-old Jakub Kiwior only made his senior Poland debut in June of 2022 but he has quickly established himself as a key figure in their set-up. Kiwior is traditionally a centre-back but has impressed at left-back for Arsenal during 2023/24. In the Poland team, meanwhile, the left-footed Kiwior slots in on the left of a back-three and has excelled in that role since debuting vs the Netherlands in 2022.
