Germany Euro 2024 Top Tip

Germany have reached at least the quarter-finals at nine of the last 13 European Championships, including appearing in six finals, and it would be a catastrophe if Julian Nagelsmann’s team didn’t feature in the last eight.

Germany′s Road to Qualification

As hosts, Germany didn’t need to qualify for the Euros, meaning they have not played a competitive fixture since the World Cup, although this doesn’t mean the last 18 months have been uneventful, not by any stretch of the imagination.

After his team crashed out in the World Cup group stages, Hansi Flick was already a man under pressure, a zeitgeist that only intensified following a string of poor friendly results that ultimately saw him sacked.

Die Mannschaft required a 93rd minute penalty to hold Ukraine to a draw, while also suffering defeats at the hands of Belgium, Poland, Colombia and Japan, the latter a 4-1 hammering that saw Flick lose his job mid-way through the September window, a nigh-on unprecedented event.

With Rudi Völler as caretaker boss, they beat France 2-1 at Westfalenstadion, before Julian Nagelsmann was appointed, given a contract that expires the day after the Euros final.

November was a pretty bleak month for Nagelsmann, defeated by Türkiye in Berlin and Austria in Vienna, although March offered green shoots of recovery, enjoying victories over both France and Netherlands.

So, in summary, it’s hard to know just how strong this team will be, but only a fool would ever back against Germany pre-tournament, let alone when they’re hosting.

Germany’s Key Players

Toni Kroos- The big news to come out of the March international break was that Toni Kroos is back, returning to the international scene, having previously retired after they crashed out of Euro 2020. He then started the wins over both France and Netherlands, taking his tally to 108 caps, assisting Florian Wirtz’s record-breaking goal that came just seven seconds into the victory at Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

Kroos’ trophy cabinet speaks for itself, winning 29 club honours and counting, including five Champions Leagues, as well as the World Cup a decade ago, although the Euros has alluded him, beaten in the semi-finals in both 2012 and 2016; will he change that in July?

Ilkay Gundogan- Alongside in a high-quality, highly-experienced midfield will be İlkay Gündoğan who, having been named captain by Julian Nagelsmann, is dreaming of hoisting aloft the Henri Delaunay Trophy in Berlin on 14 July. Now 33, he was a key figure as Manchester City won the treble last season, making 51 appearances across all competitions, and is only now properly appreciated have left for pastures new, moving to Barcelona on a free.

Gündoğan probably hasn’t shown his best self in Catalonia, but remains a key figure for die Mannschaft, earning 75 caps and scoring 18 goals so far, most-recently on target during the win over United States in Connecticut back in October.

Jamal Musiala- Despite representing England 21 times at youth level, including twice for the U21s, Musiala chose to represent the country of his berth, and die Nationalelf supporters have to be relived he did. To date, he’s earned 27 senior caps, starting all three matches at the World Cup, becoming the second-youngest man to score for Germany in Skopje in 2021, on target at the age of 18 years and 227 days, while the record is held by Marius Hiller (17 years and 241 days) set all the way back in 1910.

Despite Bayern Munich’s ongoing struggles, Musiala has scored 28 times since the start of last season, including the 89th minute winner at Köln a year ago that saw them snatch the Meisterschale on the final day. He’s hardly an unknown entity, but this Euros could be the stage at which Musiala announces himself to the world.
